6 Different Types of Security Officers

Security guards are the first line of defense for a company or residence. They are responsible for the safety and security of physical space, all assets within that space, the people within that space, and ensuring safety protocols are followed as well. They are trained to protect both people and property from crime, accidents, fire, natural disasters, and other dangers.

They typically work in shifts to provide protection services to their clients. However, the exact nature of their services can vary. There are many different types of security guards and each type has its own roles and responsibilities.

Here’s a brief guide on some of the different types of security officers and their duties.

1. Unarmed Security Officer

An unarmed security guard does not carry any weapons and instead relies on physical skills such as self-defense training. Unarmed security guards are useful across a multitude of industries from retail properties to residential security. They are usually responsible for conducting foot patrols on properties, monitoring security cameras and surveillance systems, and managing access control for entry and exit points on-site. They are also trained to spot any suspicious activity and can alert emergency services when necessary.

2. Armed Security Officer

An armed security guard is someone who is licensed by the state to carry a firearm and use it in the course of their duties. Armed security guards are highly trained in the use of their weapon and de-escalation tactics. They are required to have a high level of physical fitness, agility, and intelligence. They also need to have excellent communication skills, as well as strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.

The presence of an armed security guard can also deter crime and violence greatly. They may also be responsible for monitoring surveillance equipment and security cameras, managing access control, and patrolling property similar to their unarmed counterparts.

3. Roving Security Officer

A roving security guard is a security officer who constantly patrols a property in a vehicle. Roving security guards protect against crime and other hazards in large open spaces where foot patrols may be ineffective, such as school campuses, government property, warehouses, industrial facilities, hospitals, commercial spaces, and shopping malls. They may also enforce parking regulations within these spaces.

4. Concierge Security Officer

Concierge security guards are an important part of physical security. They are trained to provide customer service and front desk security simultaneously at a residential building or commercial property. They are there to be approachable and helpful to tenants, employees, and guests. A concierge security guard may answer any phone calls, greet people who enter the building, provide assistance by answering questions, and manage deliveries for the building as well. All of this comes with the bonus of being trained in security measures.

5. Construction & Fire Watch Security Officers

Construction security guards are responsible for the safety and security of a construction site. Construction sites are oftentimes targeted with theft as they have expensive equipment and building materials being stored there. These guards will keep a lookout for thieves and make sure that no one is trespassing on the property.  Additionally, some of these items are hazardous and may be highly flammable. Fire watch security guards make sure that the property and its assets within are safe from fires by ensuring that your property is complying with regulations.

6. Event Security Officers

Event security guards are often overlooked when it comes to event planning. However, they can provide a sense of safety and security for those in attendance. Event security guards are a crucial part of any event, conference, and large gathering. They help make sure that the venue is safe and secure for the guests and participants, especially when there are large crowds.

They can manage access control, direct foot traffic in a venue, manage vehicular traffic and pedestrians, and ensure the crowds overall safety. They can also put an end to any issues before they get out of hand.
